The biggest giant clams are at the Northwest Group, but there are plenty in the lagoon at Nuguria.
A small isolated patch between Tekani and the deepwater passage on the other side of the lagoon has some monsters.

I was privileged enough to spend a weekend diving in Nuguria (heaven on earth)at the invitation of a scuba diving friend who knew Graeme and Steve Day who's house had only just been built there. I am saddened by any of the negative aspects of ex-patriate behaviour, and ther is certianly a history of it.
I was working in Rabaul in 1994 when Tavuvur and Vulcan erupted (burying my house in Malaytown)and am proud to say I stayed on for another 15 months rebuilding the business I was working for. It was tough, but very rewarding. The aftermath priovided the opportunity to become closer to a few of my workers.
My time on Nuguria is one of my special moments and I recall Graeme making a lot of noise about conservation. I will never forget the vast numbers of giant clams.

Yes Sarah,
Tetau commutes between Rabaul and Nuguria these days. Her family is divided between the older children who now live and work in Australia and the younger ones still in PNG.

A sad end to Nugaria's story but really loved reading it. Have such fond memories and some fantastic photos of our holiday there in 1975 I think. Things like the turtle pool and the long drop toilet at the end of the jetty! And remember that runway very well! Apart from the government, the church has a lot to answer to as well. Is Tetau still there?

I am the niece of Graeme Carson and reside in Sydney, my mother, Diana, Graemes sister lives with me.
In life there are many tragedies, this is one.My mother, who suffers dementia, lives in the past and her happiest memories are of her ife at Nugaria. i also have many memories of Nugaria and well remember Temarama and Pasia. I havent seen The Carson family for a while but have spoken over the phone and Hattie has spent time with them last year. A great article about Uncle Tim (Graeme)thankyou giselle.hare@hotmail.com

I arrived by Westward Ho to Nuguria in 1969 with Graeme, my school friend Temarama and their families. In Jan 2008 on my 3rd attempt to revisit my family and I returned to Nuguria with Temarama(Toom) - Paradise lost.
Pasia Possiri and his wife Tepoi stayed with me recently in Thirroul and I am visiting Eileen Carson in Darwin next month

I feel rather guilty about that myself, Brian. I didn't do anything at all to help. Of course, we weren't expecting the sudden event that brought his life to an end. Graeme deserved far better treatment by an ungrateful Australian Government and his colourful life deserved a better ending. It's great that you're helping to keep his memory alive. Warwick

Many thanks for the biography, Brian. There were some details there that I didn't know and the account brought tears to my eyes. Graeme's latter days could have been so different but for the short-sighted politicians in Canberra and uncaring bureaucrats in PoM.
